Soon we are going to start another school year. After a set of icebreakers I want to show you three ideas for vocabulary and speaking activities which might be used during the first English lessons.

Choose an image Put a set of different images (photos, postcards, leaflets, advertisements) on the floor or on the board. Ask students to look at them and choose the one which somehow represents them. Then every student describes their choice to the group or they mingle and talk with random people. Another version: each student chooses the image so that no one else sees it, they put it in a box and sit in a circle. The teacher draws one image at a time, students guess who might have chosen that image and explain why. Then the person who has chosen the pictures gives their reasons. You can use this activity to practise different topics: - choose an image that represents you emotions or your feelings towards English, - choose an image which shows the place where you would like to go or a person you would like to meet. Below I attach 7 4-picture collages which are ready to be used during this activity. All the pictures come from Pixabay, a website with free stock photos.
The idea for this speaking activity came from Ildikó Lázár during IATEFL Hungary conference in Budapest in April 2016. I adapted it for my students and prepared my own role cards. In this task each student receives a piece of paper with their role. They have to imagine that they are on a student exchange and they want to acquaint as many new people as possible. They walk around the classroom and talk with other students. Give them about 5 minutes for that. After this time ask students some general questions so that they can share their feelings and emotions: How many people did you meet? Where you surprised by anything? Was there anything that you didn’t like? How did you feel when someone didn’t want talk with you? How did you react? Did you guess what people from different countries thought about you?
Today I suggest another two exercises for first lessons with a new group: Ask your teacher... and Unfinished sentences

TwórcaMy name is Kasia. I have been teaching for 13 years. I seek new challenges, that's why I design my own teaching materials, write articles, mentor teachers on online courses, write middle school exams. My students say I smile like Mona Lisa Archiwa
