This is the first post with examples of tasks which teach different kinds of values, in this case I believe they are diversity, tolerance, belonging, making choices, acceptance, self-awareness, creativity, respect. These exercises are perfect for the new school year or for a new language group. Groups I belong to

While working on a lesson we should plan some time for the reflection stage. It is important as it provides our students with a chance to revise the topic, state their own opinion, realise what the lesson was about and how much they learnt.
How to do it? The easiest solution is to ask students to answer a summative question in their notebook or discuss it in pairs. Example questions for reflection: What surprised you? How did you feel when…? What didn’t you like? Will this information change something in you? Will you tell someone about anything that you learnt today? What did you learn? Do you agree with the things we talked about today? 21 January, Saturday morning and a group of brave teachers willing to teach understanding of the world through English. All this happened during a conference organized by Global Issues SIG (IATEFL Poland) and WCIES (https://gisigpl.wordpress.com/). I had a pleasure to deliver a workshop on teaching values through communicative activities.
What values? Different, there are so many of them that we really have a wide choice. Each day can be devoted to a different value, each activity can convey numerous values. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is going to be celebrated on the 16th of January this year in the US. I prepared a set of exercises thanks to which students (level B1+/B2) get to know the basic information about American Civil Rights Movement and its leaders.
Today I'd like to share with you a set of exercises on verb patterns, prepared with pre-intermediate (A2+/B1) level in mind. I hope you'll find it useful.
I have used this type of calendars for some time. I usually put it on the door of the classroom and fill it with upcoming tests, events or holidays. This time I decided to create a calendar on my own. I encourage you to download it and use it to be an even better organised teacher this year.
I love this film, for me it’s really sad but at the same inspiring. This kiwi bird is determined to make his dream come true. His tear in one of the last scenes of the film shows that he managed to do it.
A few days ago I showed this film to my students and asked them to write down all the adjectives connected with personality they thought could somehow describe the bird. They came up with: ambitious, determined, stubborn, creative, brave, generous.
Post-it-notes are a perfect idea for making your students more energetic and willing to learn. They are available in many shapes, colours, sizes. In case of emergency you can replace them with small pieces of paper. They are versatile because you can use them to practise different aspects of language. They don't require a lot of preparation time. Finally, they make our students move which helps them learn in a more effective way.
There are so many advantages, so let's try and use them to make our lessons memorable and full of fun. |
TwórcaMy name is Kasia. I have been teaching for 13 years. I seek new challenges, that's why I design my own teaching materials, write articles, mentor teachers on online courses, write middle school exams. My students say I smile like Mona Lisa Archiwa
